The 3M ? Scotch-Weld ? Hot Melt Applicator EC must be grounded.
If the applicator malfunctions, grounding provides a path of least

This applicator is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding
conductor and grounding plug. The plug must be used with an
appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance
with all state and local codes and requirements.

The 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Applicator EC is intended for use on a
nominal 120-volt circuit with a grounding plug as shown in the figure
above. Make sure the applicator is connected to an outlet with the same
configuration as the plug. Do not use an adaptor.
